A chain of islands in southwestern Japan is a step closer to becoming a World Heritage site, according to government officials.

The chain includes Amami Oshima island and Tokunoshima island in Kagoshima Prefecture, and also part of Okinawa Island and Iriomote in Okinawa Prefecture.

The 43,000-hectare area will likely be approved by the World Heritage Committee between July 16 and 31. The islands are crucial for the preservation of biodiversity.

政府関係者によると、日本の南西部の島々が世界遺産の登録に一歩近づいた。

この諸島には、鹿児島県の奄美大島と徳之島、そして沖縄県の沖縄島と西表島の一部が含まれている。

この43,000ヘクタールのエリアは、7月16日から31日の間に、世界遺産委員会によって承認される見通しとなっている。これらの島々は生物多様性の保全において重要な場所である。
